Poker Strategy

Every player needs a poker strategy. Whether you have a good or bad poker hand, you need to know how you’re going to play. Plus, it’s important to understand what other poker players expect from you when you sit down at the poker table. Here are some poker strategy tips to help you play well and win that pot!

1. Be realistic about your hand; if it’s terrible – fold. There’s no point delaying it, you’re just wasting money.

2. Don’t play too many hands – fold at the beginning if you have a bad hand. Too often, if you keep playing the hands and folding later, your opponents will figure it out.

3. Don’t be the worst player at the table. Play at, or beneath, your level. If you play below your level, you’ll get practice without losing your shirt.

4. Know the rules of your game – particularly the variation you’re playing. Otherwise, you lose money by making ignorant mistakes.

5. Keep your eyes open. Watching your opponents is a powerful way to learn strategy – at least for this particular game.

6. Don’t pay too much attention to your cards. Watch what’s going on and watch your opponents.

7. Learn to bluff. It’s a great too, but only if you know how to do it well. You have to practice bluffing.

8. Play as often as you possibly can. Experience is the best teacher.

9. If you’re having a bad day, don’t play. Your mood will affect your whole game. If you get frustrated, leave the table and take a break.

10. Have a poker face. Don’t give away any emotions at the table.

11. Understand poker etiquette. If you can’t follow the basic poker etiquette rules, you’ll never be accepted at any high stakes or casino poker game.

Here are some basic things you need to understand:

• Don’t use profanity
• Don’t argue or shout. Don’t throw, tear or bend cards.
• Don’t act out of turn
• Don’t splash chips into the pot.
• Don’t read someone else’s hand at the showdown. Let them show their own hand.
• Don’t instruct another player to show his hand – even at the showdown.

Following these simple poker rules and strategies can help you look like a very experienced player – even if you aren’t really experienced yet. Watch other players and play as often as you can; soon you’ll be a smooth and confident poker player – whatever the stakes.
