If you’re a poker enthusiast, you’d likely watch poker shows on television just for fun. But, if you want to improve your game, watching professional poker players on television is probably the second best way to improve your game. (The first, of course, is playing yourself.) Here are some of the best poker shows on television.
ESPN’s World Series Of Poker – This is the biggest poker event in the country, and the biggest television poker event, too. These players play for high money and you’ll see a variety of games, including 5 card stud and Omaha. The main event is a no limit Texas Hold’em game.
Travel Channel’s World Poker Tour – This is the Travel Channel’s highest rated show. It follows the World Poker Tournament around the country to different casinos.
Bravo’s Celebrity Poker Showdown – This show is so popular in part because people like to watch their favorite celebrities play poker. You’re not likely to learn a lot from this show, because these are not the necessarily the best poker players. However, it’s probably the most entertaining poker show on television.
GSN’s High Stakes Poker – This is one of the newer poker shows. It’s not a typical poker tournament; rather you see some of the best professional poker players in the world gambling with their own money. It’s great high stakes entertainment and a good learning opportunity, too.
GSN’s Poker Royale – This show is something of a poker “game show”. They pit two groups against each other. Some shows have featured, for example, celebrities vs. professional poker players.
Fox Sports’ Poker Superstars - This is an invitation only tournament of the best professional poker players in the world.
Ultimate Poker Challenge - This show lasts 26 weeks, following a series of no limit Texas Hold’em tournaments. The show is filmed at the Plaza in Las Vegas. This one is gets you hooked, and you’re learning from some of the best professional poker players around.
Now, watching television poker might not be akin to taking lessons from a professional poker player, but it is a good way to learn how the professionals play without gambling any of your own money. If you play close attention, you can learn important skills regarding how to bluff and keep a good poker face. It’s great fun to watch while you dream of your future as a high stakes poker player!
