If you’re going to be a regular host of “poker night”, there are some poker supplies that you simply must own. There are lots of places to buy poker supplies; you might buy from several vendors in order to get the best selection and best price on each item you need. Here are the basics:
Poker chips – You’ll find every manner of poker chips available from poker supply stores. You can find poker chips that look just like they came from a Las Vegas casino, or you can have poker chips customized. For custom poker chips, you supply the vendor with a digital picture file and they put it right on your chips. Many vendors offer a “trade up” option on your poker chips so that you can trade in your old chips when you’re ready for a new set. If your typical poker game is for 4-6 players, you’ll need a 330 piece poker chip set. If your typical game is for 8-10 people, you’ll need a 500 piece set.
Poker Table – Poker tables come in two basic varieties; tables and table tops. Tables are fixed pieces of furniture (though many fold) while table tops are simply fold up poker “boards” that you place over an existing table (like your kitchen table). Determine whether you need a fixed table or table top by how often you’ll use the table. Determine your table size by how many players you typically host. Be certain that your poker table can handle drinks and spills. Many fixed tables have cup holders. If you choose a folding table or a table top, be certain that it can handle spills without warping or staining.
Dealer Buttons – You can buy inexpensive buttons with the word “Dealer” written on them. These make it easy to keep track of the current dealer.
Playing Cards – You need playing cards in excellent condition for every poker game. Cards designed especially for poker games are best. Keep a good supply, so that you’re never forced to use worn cards.
Storage supplies – You’ll likely want a case for your poker chips, and you may want other storage trays and cases to hold playing cards, dealer buttons, etc.
Other Accessories – Buttons indicating small and big blinds and other reminders can be very useful.
You’ll find a huge variety of vendors available to assist with your poker supply needs. Check local stores and online vendors so that you find the best selection and get the best prices. Online vendors often have very good prices, but take into consideration the fact that you may have to pay shipping. You may be better off to pay a slightly higher price at a local retailer, avoiding shipping charges.
Like many other products, poker supplies come in a wide range of prices and quality. Consider how often you host “poker night” and how much your budget will allow you to spend on supplies.
