Texas Holdem Odds

As in all gambling games, probability is an important factor, and players should understand the Texas Hold’Em odds in order to have a good grasp of how likely they are to win a given hand. Here’s a primer on Texas Hold’Em odds to help you understand your chances of winning.

Here are the important probabilities terms you need to understand to increase your odds of winning Texas Hold’Em.

Outs – This is the number of cards left in the deck that could help your hand. This is simple subtraction. You know how many cards have been dealt, so you know the total number of cards left to deal. Then you figure, based on your cards in the hole and the community cards, which cards would be helpful to you. Of course, what you don’t know is how many of the cards that would help your hand are being held by your opponents.

Pot Odds – The odds you get when comparing the current size of the pot against your next call. You compare your outs or your chance of winning to the size of the pot. If your chance of winning is significantly better than the ratio of the pot size to a bet, then you have good pot odds. If it's lower, then you have bad pot odds.

Bet Odds – The odds you get as a result of evaluating the number of callers to a raise. With bet odds, you try to factor in how many people are going to call a raise.

Implied Odds - The odds you are getting after the assumed result of betting for the remainder of the hand. With implied odds, you're thinking about reactions for the rest of the game. This is tough because you’re predicting the actions of your opponents.

In Texas Hold 'Em, you use outs and pot odds the most. These are the most important odds you’ll calculate for your Texas Hold’Em strategy and they are also the easiest to calculate. It’s simple division. The numerator is the number of outs you have. The denominator is the number of cards left that haven’t been seen. The result is the percentage chance of making one of those outs.

The next step is to use bet odds and implied odds. Once you can quickly calculate outs and pot odds, bet and implied odds are just a longer equation. Given some time, you’ll be able to quickly calculate your odds during each round of betting before you call or raise.
